Contraception

Personalised, Specialist Contraception Care

Contraception is something most women will consider at different stages of life — from early adulthood to after children and into perimenopause. It can also help manage hormonal symptoms such as heavy periods or form part of HRT. Led by Harriet Jacobs, Midwife and Contraception Specialist, and delivered in collaboration with Clinic51, our service provides clear, personalised guidance to help you choose the option that genuinely suits your body and lifestyle, including support with implant fitting when needed.

Contraception FAQs

  • NHS contraception services are an excellent resource, but many women prefer private care because it offers more time to explore all suitable options, ask detailed questions, and discuss lifestyle, symptoms and long-term goals. Private consultations also allow greater continuity with the same clinician and easier booking at a time that suits you.

  • Many women choose private care because contraception can significantly impact mood, bleeding patterns, skin, energy, and overall quality of life. Having time to make an informed, personalised decision reduces the chance of choosing a method that doesn’t suit you and avoids months of discomfort or adjustment. Private care offers space, continuity and clear guidance to help you get it right from the start.

  • You’ll have a relaxed, in-depth discussion about your symptoms, cycle, past experiences, fertility plans and lifestyle. Harriet will then explain the options that match your needs — how they work, pros and cons, and what to expect physically and hormonally. The goal is a clear, confident decision without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

  • Yes — seeing us privately does not affect your access to NHS contraception. The main difference is that any treatments, prescriptions or procedures done privately must be self-funded. If you prefer, you can take your personalised plan back to your NHS provider to discuss NHS-funded options.

  • It’s more common than you might think — and it can take several months for the body to adjust to a new method. If the option isn’t quite right for you, you may experience irregular bleeding, mood changes or symptoms that take time to rebalance.
A private consultation helps reduce the trial-and-error by taking a deeper look at your medical history, cycle pattern and personal preferences, giving you a more tailored starting point and clearer expectations from the outset.

Implant-specific FAQs

  • It’s a small, flexible rod inserted under the skin of the upper arm, releasing a steady dose of progestogen to prevent pregnancy for up to three years.

  • The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, so most people feel only pressure, not pain. Some bruising or tenderness afterwards is normal.

  • It is over 99% effective, making it one of the most reliable forms of contraception available.

  • This depends on where you are in your cycle — your clinician will explain whether protection is immediate or takes a short transition period.

  • Both procedures typically take 15–25 minutes, including preparation and aftercare advice.

  • Light bruising, slight swelling, or tenderness can occur around the insertion site for a few days. You’ll receive full aftercare guidance.

  • Fertility usually returns very quickly — often within days or weeks — so alternative contraception should be discussed if needed.

  • Yes. You are welcome to bring someone for support, and the appointment environment is calm, private and unrushed.
