At The Lodsworth Clinic, in collaboration with Clinic 51, we offer professional and supportive contraceptive coil fittings and removals in a calm, comfortable environment. The coil (IUD or IUS) is a highly effective, long-acting form of contraception that provides reliable protection without the need for daily medication. Understanding the Coil

An intrauterine device (IUD or IUS), commonly known as the coil, is a small T-shaped device placed into the womb to provide long-acting, reversible contraception. It offers reliable, low-maintenance protection for several years.

The hormonal coil (such as Mirena) can also support women during perimenopause and menopause by providing the progesterone component of HRT. It often reduces heavy or painful periods and delivers progesterone directly to the uterus, helping to minimise side effects.

Both copper and hormonal coils offer highly effective, long-term contraception without the need for daily pills or frequent prescriptions.

What’s included in your Coil Fitting & Removal Consultation

  • A full, personalised consultation with Harriet Jacobs, Contraception Specialist, giving you time to discuss your goals, medical history and any questions before the procedure.

  • Clear guidance on choosing the right coil for you, including how it works, its benefits, suitability and what to expect during and after fitting.

  • A calm, professional coil fitting or removal carried out by Harriet, with a focus on comfort, reassurance and minimising discomfort throughout.

  • Time to rest after your appointment, with a warm drink in our peaceful waiting area before you head home.

  • The option to have your existing coil removed and a new one fitted within the same appointment, where clinically appropriate.

Is a Coil Right for Me?

The coil can be a great option if you want:

  • Long-term, low-maintenance contraception

  • A hormone-free alternative (copper IUD)

  • Lighter or more manageable periods (IUS)

  • Reliable protection with quick return to fertility when removed

Your clinician will help you decide which type best suits your needs.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

Before the Fitting

We begin with a consultation to discuss your medical history, menstrual cycle, and contraceptive goals. Your clinician will explain the different coil options, answer questions, and ensure you feel fully informed before proceeding.

During the Fitting

A coil fitting usually takes just a few minutes. You may feel some cramping during the procedure, but we take our time and ensure you are as comfortable as possible. Many women describe the process as similar to a smear test.

After the Fitting

It’s normal to experience mild cramping or spotting for a few days. You can return to normal activities straight away, although light discomfort may last a short while.

Your coil begins working immediately (depending on the type and timing), and we’ll explain everything you need to know before you leave.
